Livestock production as a source of livelihood in this country faces numerous and intractable challenges. Notable among these challenges is the lack of proper identification and traceability system of livestock  among the pastoral communities in the dry lands as well as the highlands (dairy producing counties) is a critical challenge that is impeding effective livestock trade and marketing both locally and at the regional/global markets. This lack of systematic livestock identification has been identified as the root cause of the sustained in breeding practiced by farmers, poor delivery and monitoring of the impacts of veterinary services, unproductive results of extension services, inaccessibility to insurance and credit opportunities, and inadequate access to regional and global market opportunities.

As a result of this the Kenya Livestock Marketing Council under the Kenya Feed the Future Innovation Engine (KIE) supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)  is currently implementing a NEW INNOVATION that is aimed at enhancing the ability by farmers to properly identify and trace their  livestock. This innovation is being implemented in the following counties: Isiolo, Turkana, Nakuru, Nyeri, Nyahururu, Nandi, Kericho, Laikipia, and Embu.
